What is Document Triage?

I am currently working with Dr. Shipman on a Microsoft funded project called Document Triage. The basic idea behind that project (and my Ph.D. research) is that we are trying to explore the possibilities, challenges and difficulties related to the extensive reading (engagement with multiple documents at once) and hyper-extensive reading (engagement with subdocument components and fragmentary information) that can be achieved through a setting of a focal document (or documents) and a periphery or background of other documents relevant to the task at hand. Looking beyond the intensive reading and having in mind that the key idea of the document triage is the transition of the readerís attention from document to document to contextual overview, we are seeking for answers on questions like how we could better support that kind of reading using multiple displays and what is the best way to help users make effective choices about allocating their attention.
